According to a new poll from Bloomberg, football is America’s favorite pastime.
67% of poll respondants said that gridiron is America’s pastime. The rest voted for baseball.
Bloomberg’s Will Leitch doesn’t see these figures as surprising. He argues that it’s due to the media these factors are the way they are. The nation has been driven away from the MLB with the constant headlines about politics, concussions, domestic abuse cases and drug use.
“It has been a long, long time since baseball was truly America’s pastime, and it has nothing to do with anything baseball has done wrong. It has been since … television. …The NFL is terrific to watch on television in a way baseball isn’t and never was, and we are a nation of television watchers.”
The minute people realized how easy football was to follow on television – even if you understand oh so much – was the minute baseball stopped being America’s pastime.
